Curricular plans in the courses leading to the MA and PhD degrees comprise subjects falling under two main headings: ''Fundamental Concepts'' and ''Topic Seminars''. ''Fundamental Concepts'' are regularly offered as 60-hour subjects and deal with basic concepts and issues within the disciplinary field. ''Topic Seminars'' are offered as 15-hour, 30-hour, 45-hour and 60-hour subjects and provide specialization on core topics investigated within the Program's research areas and subareas. 15-hour Topic Seminars are also offered as intensive short courses taught by guest lecturers from other Graduate Programs in Brazil and abroad. Although all subjects are elective, students are strongly encouraged to take Fundamental Concepts Subjects.
Most classes of the Program are face-to-face and taught in Portuguese. Although some subjects may be done online, it is not considered a distance-learning course. Some activities may be offered in other languages such as English, Spanish, German, or French, especially in the event of foreign visiting scholars. The subjects are divided into focus areas as follows:
Focus Area 1 - Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics
Fundamentals of Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics I: Phonology (course load of 60 hours)
Fundamentals of Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics II: Syntax (course load of 60 hours)
Fundamentals of Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics III: Semantics (course load of 60 hours)
Fundamentals of Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics VI: Functional Syntax (course load of 60 hours)
Variable Topics Seminars on Theoretical and Descriptive Linguistics (course load of 15, 30, 45, or 60 hours).
Focus Area 2 - Text and Discourse Linguistics
Fundamentals of Text and Discourse Linguistics I: Textualization and Genres (course load of 60hs/class)
Fundamentals of Text and Discourse Linguistics II: Discourse Theories (course load of 60hs/class)

Focus Area 3 - Applied Linguistics
Variable Topics Seminars in Applied Linguistics (course load of 15, 30, 45, or 60 hours).
The Fundamentals disciplines of areas 1 and 2 will be accepted due to the Applied Linguistics interdisciplinary nature.
